Today i’ll write about some great places to visit in Bavaria, like the popular Neuschwanstein castle and the Christmas style town of Rothenburg Ob der Tauber
Bavaria is an area close to Munich and Austria border, and includes many different pretty towns and a long romantic road known as Romantische Strasse which runs from the Neuschwenstein castle to the city of Wuzburg

HOW TO ARRIVE TO BAVARIA AND FOLLOW THE ROMANTISCHE STRASSE
We arrived in this region by landing at the Memmingen airport, served by low cost companies like Ryanair. Then from Memmingen, we rented a car and started the tour by visiting the Neuschwenstein castle. After that, we drove toward north to reach the other towns.
Eventually, to shorten the trip it’s possible to “bypass” the romantic road to follow the more convenient highway
I personally believe that using public transportations is unconvenient. In particular the entire area is characterized by a nice sense of freedom and wide spaces, and owning a vehicle gives more freedom.
During our trip, many times we stopped our car at the edge of the road to enjoy the landscapes with the Bavarian alps in the background and dozens of lakes everywhere…..
WHAT TO DO IN THE AREA OF NEUSCHWENSTEIN CASTLE
When we visited Neuschwenstein castle, we stayed in a nice hotel situated on top of the hill north east of Hopfensee lake, from which we enjoyed a nice panoramic view of the lake itself with the castle in the background. During these days, we also had the chance to spend some hours in the elegant town of Fussen, just some miles away from both the castle and some interesting cable cars stations, which allow people to get on top of the mountains to enjoy the panorama, like that of Garmish.
In particular, the castle has been built by Ludwig II, and its popularity has been influenced by Walt Disney, as it easily recalls at first look that of the Sleeping Beauty.
VISIT TO THE NEUSCHWENSTEIN CASTLE
To visit the castle, we arrived at the little town of Hohenschwangau where we found a comfortable car park and all the services we needed, like cafes, toilettes and so on. Anyway, that wasn’t an option. Instead, we have been forced to leave the car here in any case, since the road to the castle from this point was close and accessible only on foot, or eventually through the dedicated shuttle bus. While here, before proceeding we needed to buy the tickets in advance in the information center, and ONLY after, we proceeded to the castle, by following on foot the main path, or by taking the dedicated shuttle bus which would have left us close to the rear side of the castle itself
In particular, during our visit there was no ticket office inside the castle, and buying one at the car park ticket office was the only option
This is the website to find information about the tickets and the visit of Neuschwenstein castle
THE PANORAMIC MARIENBRUCKE BRIDGE
By arriving to the castle on foot, we continued to follow the little path on the right side of the main entrance, which led us to the MarienBrucke bridge, from which we saw a spectacular view of the castle with a waterfall beneath it. The view is visible in one of my pictures inside the article
NOTE: This place is also the main stop of the Neuschwenstein shuttle bus.
BEST TIME TO VISIT BAVARIA
I believe this region can be enjoyed during the entire year. For instance, while in summer is full of places to do some hiking/trekking activities and to enjoy panoramic points along the roads, in winter it becomes an ideal place for those who like ski sport and Christmas markets and shops. In particular, we have found Christmas shops of the Rothenburg to be opened even in April
Furthermore, Bavaria is also popular for its Oktoberfest festival in autumn, a further reason to visit it
MY FAVOURITE TOWNS OF BAVARIA
What attracted me more of this area was the special architecture, which recalls so much that of fairy tales…..long and tall roofs, pastel colors, everything seems made with a great fantasy…..Among my favourite towns, there is Rothenburg Ob Der Tauber, with its unique Christmas atmosphere, followed by the elegant Fussen, which is close to the Neuschwenstein Schloss, thus recommended for a short lunch after spending the morning in the castle.
By the way, Bavaria is not limited to towns. It also presents interesting cities, among which Munich and Nuremberg
A NOTE REGARDING THE OKTOBERFEST
It’s well know as one of the most important beer festival. If you are a beer lover, it would be great to visit Bavaria in October. Following is an overview of the Oktoberfest festival with some useful informations
Bavaria has many different things to offer, among which beer festivals, Christmas markets, great architectures and ski or trekking activities. I really enjoyed it and i hope to have provided a good overview of it
